Volunteers make short work of Gates project

Helpers needed for more cleanup dates

By James Day

Volunteers with the Santiam Canyon Long Term Recovery Group made quick work of a tree-planting project March 5 in Gates.

The original plan for the project, said Kevin Dial, manager of the long term recovery group, was to just plant 30 trees and shrubs on the property. But the crew was so efficient, nailing the plantings in just one hour, that the volunteers also assisted with other fire-damage clearing and recovery work.

The fire-related work included taking down standing dead trees, removing burned stumps and cleaning and clearing the property to the Oregon Department of Transportation right of way.

The crew was on hand for 3 hours, with the property owners telling the volunteers that they  had saved them literally months of labor.

The Santiam Canyon Long Term Recovery Group also is seeking volunteers for a series of upcoming projects, including a March 19 river bank cleaning, a March 26 rock pickup, an April 2 pasture cleanup and an April 9 planting and brush cleanup. All the dates are Saturdays.
