Grants available for collaborative forest restoration

The Oregon Department of Forestry and the Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board are offering $500,000 in grants for collaborative projects that lead to forest restoration or stewardship improvements on federal forest lands in Oregon.

The grants must be used on parcels managed by the U.S. Forest Service or the Bureau of Land Management.

A total of $300,000 is available for projects that enhance zones of agreement for restoration on projects such as vegetation management on USFS and BLM property. The remaining $200,000 will pay for efforts to strengthen collaborative forest organizations.

The deadline to apply for the grants is 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 23. For an online application go to https://apps.wrd.state.or.us/apps/oweb/oa/.

Note that an OWEB online grant management system login is required to access the online grant application. For questions or information on the application process contact Kathy Leopold of OWEB at 971-345-7017 or [email protected].

Proposals should specify the project geography applicable to the proposed work, identify the forest ecosystems addressed within the proposed scope of work, and justify the proposed work to restore forest ecosystems.

The grants are open to local collaborative groups engaged in forest restoration and/or stewardship on federal forests in Oregon (forests managed by the USFS or BLM). Eligible grantees must have 501(c)3 status or a signed agreement with an eligible fiscal sponsor. This can be a non-profit community based organization, a unit of local government or tribal government. Applicants must be based in Oregon.

For definitions and eligible project activities, please go to www.oregon.gov/OWEB, click on “grant programs” and click on “forest collaboratives.”

Those interested in information on types of eligible projects should contact Kyle Sullivan-Astor of the ODF at 541-285-8685 or [email protected].
