Service center expands offerings

The Canyon Service Center has honored former volunteer and booster Mike Long with a plaque.

The plaque was mounted on a streetside bench on Dec. 10 in the 200 block of Broadway in Mill City.

About two dozen people, along with Jan Long and other members of the family, were on hand for the dedication. Mike and Jan Long’s ties to the Canyon Service Center go back to its formation in 1996.

Mike Long died March 7 at the age of 86 after a short battle with leukemia.

The Canyon Service Center, whose mission is to promote wellness for people over 50, is managed by volunteers and funded through can, bottle, clothing, monetary, and facility-use donations, and membership dues. A long-standing service it provides to Canyon residents includes the loaning of mobility and bathroom equipment. People in need can call the CSC at 503-897-4176 to borrow equipment.

Some new events being offered at the center include:

• Twice weekly group fitness started in November.

• In January chair yoga is expected on the calendar.

• A new social event is being added twice monthly called Tile & Dice Game Time.

• The Center also is planning a workshop on end of life planning. Attendees can learn about and complete forms expressing their life support wishes (CPR, feeding tubes, etc.) and appointing a health representative as well as receive an introduction on how wills and trusts work. This class is at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 30, with coffee and cookies offered at 1:10 p.m..

• Also coming this winter is a basic life support CPR class and mental health first aid classes.

People who have leadership or health care support roles are encouraged to participate.

• The CSC is also partnering with the Mill City Lions Club and Santiam Hospital Community Health and Outreach on a Community Health Fair in April, which will be held at the Canyon Service Center.

There are several ways to keep up with the CSC’s schedule of events. Call 503-897-4176, watch
