Happy Fourth of July! Canyon offers holiday thrills, activities

The Fourth of July is headed this way, with summer fun planned for Mill City and the Detroit area.

Mill City’s Independence Day program runs for two days, Thursday, July 4 and Friday, July 5, with the weather forecast calling for sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-80s. The fun begins generally at 9 a.m. both days, with both days featuring vendors, a beer garden and music. Events are at Kimmel Park except where noted.

Special events Thursday include, the Lions Club breakfast, 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the high school commons, the Rick Posekany Memorial Run/Walk, 9 a.m. at the high school, the Grand Parade at noon, the car show from 2 to 6 p.m., the 3 on 3 basketball tournament at 4 p.m. and fireworks at dusk.

Friday’s events, all at Kimmel, include a 10 a.m. horseshoe tourney, an 11 a.m. mutt show, old fashioned family games at 1 p.m. and a cornhole event at 3 p.m.

The mutt show will produce winners in a series of categories: Longest Tail, Longest Ears, Shortest Legs, Youngest Mutt, Oldest Mutt, Best Trick, Mutt/Handler Look Alike, Most Patriotic/Best Costume, Shaggiest Mutt and Mutt of the Year.

Detroit also is hosting two days of events, with day one helping to pay for day two. Friday, July 5 is the Party in the Park from 6 to 10 p.m. at the city park on Patton Road. The event features live music, food vendors, a beer garden and park games. All of the proceeds will go to pay for Saturday night’s classic Fireworks Over Detroit Lake spectacular. The city park is hosting music, food carts, yard games, an auction and beer garden starting at 6 p.m. on July 6. Bring your lawn chairs, with the fireworks set to blast off at about 10 p.m.

Earlier Saturday, a fundraising pancake breakfast will be held from 7:30 to 10 a.m. at the Detroit Community Center on Santiam Avenue. Proceeds will benefit the drive for the Idanha-Detroit Rural Fire Protection District to help pay for its new fire station, which is planned for a summer 2025 opening.

Downtown from 11 a.m. to noon the Detroit Patriotic Parade takes the spotlight. Participants are encouraged to decorate their golf carts or ATVs to ride in the parade. The parade line-up starts at 10:30 a.m. in the park.

Event sponsors in Detroit are Siegmund Excavation & Construction and Davidson’s Masonry.
