Santiam Canyon SD names 2024 Hall of Fame inductees

Santiam Canyon School District (SCSD) has announced its 2024 Hall of Fame recipients. The honorees will be inducted at this year’s 21st annual ceremony, set for 6 p.m. Nov. 9, at the Santiam Jr./Sr. High auditorium

This year’s recipients are former students Frances Reid McGuire, Leslie Stewart and Erik Stromquist.  Being inducted as school district supporters/boosters are Ken Cartwright and Stanford Smith. Under the Outstanding Former Team category, the three-peat State Champion Wolverettes from the classes of 1993, 1994 and 1995 were selected.

McGuire is a former Santiam High School student who spent many years as a professor at Lane Community College. She has also been an avid supporter of both the school district and city of Mill City for many years and continues to do so. She is a member of the local historical society.

Stewart is also a Santiam High School alum. Stewart is a successful real estate agent and is involved in civic and school activities throughout the Santiam Canyon. Her support to help others has been endless and she continues to sponsor and promote activities which have benefitted kids and adults in a variety of settings.

Stromquist is a mid-80s Santiam High School graduate who is the founder and CEO of the technology company CTL, which is located in the Portland metro area, with offices in Europe and Southeast Asia. Stromquist has been very supportive of the SCSD by providing Chromebooks and other technology support. He is one of the top executives in Portland area when it comes to Chromebook technology.

Cartwright, who is probably best known as the voice of the canyon, is with KYAK 90.1 FM radio station.  Cartwright has been instrumental in providing support to the canyon and school district by not only by providing pertinent, educational and entertaining programs over the airways, but he also providing coverage of local athletic events and music opportunities for many students. He is always willing to promote anything positive regarding the SCSD.

Smith, who is now deceased, is someone who never attended the local school district. Only a handful of people in the canyon have ever met him or probably even know who he is. He started a scholarship at the University of Oregon, under the name of his stepfather William Quinn. The Quinn Scholarship began in 1997, and since its inception has granted more than 40 Santiam graduates a four-year, full-ride scholarship to the University of Oregon. Smith was fortunate to have his stepfather pay his way through college and he wanted to repay that generosity.

The dominance of the Santiam Wolverettes Dance Team was never more evident than during the three-year, three-peat State Champion run from 1993 to1995. These outstanding teams accomplished something no other local team has ever accomplished – winning three consecutive state titles.

Members of these teams were:  Spring Aerni (95), Sheronda Allen (94, 95) Christina Benton (93, 94), Julie Benton (93), Jordia Blumenstein (93), Sarah Brownstone (93,94,95), Carli Castro (93,94), Lindsay Colvin (95), April Cook (95), Candace Downey (95), Contessa Downey (93, 94), Trisha Downey (93), Dawn Fritz (93), Heather Gleason (94, 95), Meghan Jenkins (93, 94), Missy Jennings (93, 94, 95), Stacie Kent (93, 94), Jolene Kowalski (93), Aimee Larsen (93), Carla Lomax (93, 94, 95), Tricia Lyon (95), Alicia Mickey (95), Aundrea Mickey (93), Shannon Mickey (93, 94), Holly Ohrt (95), Cara Quackenbush (95), Amelia Quihuis (93,94), Angie Richards (93, 94), Melissa Sterrett (95), Crystal Toney (94, 95), Tami Ulin (93,94,95), Sabrina Walker (93, 94, 95), Jessica Winn (93, 94, 95), head coach Teri Moberg (93,94,95), assistant coach Christina Benton (95), and assistant coach Julie Patershall (94).
